At ISB, CPR training is more than a requirement; it’s a cornerstone of our health and safety program and a vital part of annual staff development. The skills gained through this training extend beyond the school gates, equipping our community to respond effectively in critical moments, wherever we find ourselves.
“This summer,” reports Primary Instructional Assistant Lidija Jankovic, “I found myself in a situation where I needed to save the life of a three-year-old girl. The mandatory annual CPR and first aid training, along with various emergency response drills, enabled me to act confidently in a life-or-death situation.”
At a community pool, she noticed a young child in distress who had slipped underwater. Acting quickly, Lidija helped ensure CPR was performed until the child began breathing again. Thanks to her calm guidance and training, the situation was resolved safely; a powerful reminder that preparedness can save lives.
Reflecting afterward, Lidija noted how important it was not only to know CPR procedures, but to practice them regularly so they become instinctive under pressure. This is why ISB invests in consistent training for all staff: certified CPR and First Aid sessions with the emergency ward are held every two years, while annual on-campus refreshers are led by ISB’s doctor, Dr. Ljiljana Balos. These are further supported by Primary Nurse Monika Pernjakovic, whose
expertise ensures that our staff feel both confident and capable when it matters most.
Our commitment extends to students as well. CPR and First Aid training is integrated into the curriculum through Health lessons (Grades 5–12), PHE classes (Grades 6–12), and Science classes (Grades 6–12). Students also have additional opportunities to build these skills through CCAs and the International Award program. For the past two years, Grades 10–12 students have participated in external training with the emergency ward, earning non-medical staff certification as part of ISB’s lifelong learning approach.
Parents, too, are part of this culture of readiness. For more than 20 years, ISB has offered CPR and First Aid training sessions for families, with some parents also choosing to pursue external certification through the emergency ward.
At ISB, health and safety isn’t just a policy, it’s a culture of care that empowers staff, students, and parents to be prepared when it matters most.
